Level-up guide

MJ campaign mode is you vs three AIs in Hong Kong–style mahjong. The goal is not the most wins — it is finishing a session ranked first by purse profit, like a real money table.

How to level up

  1. Click Start game and play a full session at your current level (hand count varies by level — see table below).
  2. When the session ends, read the Session complete dialog — rank and profit matter.
  3. Finish 1st → advance to the next level.
Not 1st → stay on the same level; try again.

The promotion rule is the same at every level (including level 10):
At session end, your purse profit must be highest among all four players, with no tie.

If profit is tied, win count breaks the tie — more wins ranks higher. Still tied? That is not a sole 1st place, so no promotion.

Level 10 Grand Master 牌王 is the top tier. There is no level 11, but you can keep playing for badges and bragging rights.

What is a session?

Ranking: purse, not win count

Metric Meaning
Profit Change in your purse over the session — this decides promotion
Wins How many hands you won; tie-breaker when profit is equal
Faan Higher faan pays exponentially; one big hand can beat many small ones

Ron on your discard costs you 3 × 2^faan; tsumo collects 2^faan from each opponent. Fewer deal-ins and higher-scoring wins usually beat spamming chicken hands.

Before you start, choose Min faan (header or welcome screen):

Higher min faan makes the table harder, but promotion still means finish 1st.

The sidebar Campaign panel shows your level, opponent names, and “Finish 1st in a session (N hands) to advance.”

Early levels (roughly 1–4) show coaching tips in a banner (win shape, kabe, open melds, faan). Levels 9–10 are a clean table — no hints.

Know your opponents

AIs use English nicknames in the sidebar:

Name Style (short)
JoePlays by gut — good for early levels
SidChases shanten only; fast but blind to tile efficiency
IvyClassic ukeire — mid-tier benchmark
PrudenceTightens up when pressured
TessLike Ivy with exact wall counts
NoraLooks a few turns ahead
VeraOptimizes for purse (EV)
YukiPlays for big hands and long-term value — late-game boss

Higher levels mean smarter defense, faan planning, and table reading. Do not race them on speed alone — manage profit and risk.

Practical tips

  1. Finish the full session — restarting mid-match abandons it; no promotion.
  2. Only your current level counts — after you advance, you can practice lower levels (marked “practice”); those wins do not promote you.
  3. Do not count yourself out at halftime — comebacks happen (big hands, opponent deal-ins). The Comeback badge is for trailing at the midpoint and finishing 1st.
  4. Avoid deal-ins — one ron can cost triple; late game, watch kabe (tiles with none left in the wall are safer).
  5. Stack faan — seat/round winds, dragons, half flush, all pungs; high-level AIs do this too.
  6. Pick a realistic min faan — try 0 or 1 as a beginner; 1 matches many club tables.
  7. Turn voice onStart game enables Cantonese TTS by default; tile calls and claim windows are easier to follow.

Badges (optional — not required to level up)

FAQ

Q: I won lots of hands — why didn’t I level up?
A: Total profit may not be 1st — e.g. you fed big rons or opponents tsumo’d often.
Q: What if I tie for profit with 2nd place?
A: Win count breaks the tie. Still tied? Not sole 1st — no promotion.
Q: Can I skip ahead to a higher level?
A: Yes — pick Lv 1–10 on the welcome screen. Opponents scale with level. Wrong pick? Use Reset and choose again.
Q: What does Reset do?
A: Clears level, badges, and promotion history and returns to the welcome screen. It does not affect other players on the server.
Q: After level 10?
A: Keep playing Grand Master, collect badges, try higher min faan — no further levels, ultimate challenge.
